EAPS Teaching Fellows

In Spring 2007 EAPS (in conjunction with disciplinary units) will support one advanced graduate student to teach an undergraduate seminar (on East Asia, Southeast Asia, or the Pacific). Applicants must be advanced to candidacy and currently writing an Asia-focused dissertation. Selection will be based on the merits and contributions of the proposed course, on the strength of the overall application materials, and the student’s progress toward the degree.

Please Submit:

1. A 2-3 page course proposal that includes a basic course outline.

2. A 1-2 page statement of qualifications to teach this particular course; please refer to your own training and dissertation research.

3. A CV.

4. 2 letters of recommendation (including one from your primary advisor) that address your qualifications for teaching the proposed course and your progress in the department.

5. A brief letter (or email) from the Head or Chair of the department in which you plan to teach the course, agreeing to schedule the course.

Conference Travel

EAPS has limited funds to support travel to conferences in the United States at which you are presenting a paper. Please submit a 1 page proposal that outlines the nature and significance of your participation in the conference; please indicate the relevance of this conference participation to your graduate career. Please have your advisor sign that application as well. These funds are designated to only cover travel costs up to $400.

EAPS Learning Communities

In 2003, EAPS inaugurated learning communities. Learning communities have made a difference on campus and many of them have emerged as Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) reading groups. Learning communities are intended to be groups of students and faculty who meet periodically to discuss readings and in some cases the writings of the members; learning communities also on occasion bring outside speakers to campus. Please submit a 1-page description of the proposed learning community that includes evidence of faculty and student interest. Interdisciplinary reach and the inclusion of non-Asianists are welcome but not required. Funds may be used for copying materials and inviting off-campus visitors.

Stipend: $500 (to be used for Learning Community-related expenses)
Applications welcome any time

Pre-Dissertation Summer Travel

EAPS will support 1-2 students in summer 2007 for exploratory research in East Asia, Southeast Asia or the Pacific. The maximum award is $2500. Please submit a 2-3-page single-space application in which you:

1. Describe your proposed dissertation research

2. Outline your proposed summer activities (with specific reference to the length of your planned stay) in relation to your proposed dissertation

3. Review your preparation for this research

4. Indicate whether you have secured research contacts in your destination country

Applications must also include a CV, 2 letters of recommendation (one from your advisor – letters should refer specifically to your readiness for your proposed activities and their significance to your proposed dissertation), and a budget. Also please indicate what other sources of funding you are seeking or have secured for this research travel.

Funds for Taking Courses/Conducting Research at Freeman Chinese Partner Universities
Thanks to the generous Freeman Fellows program, every year 16 Chinese scholars spend 11 months at the University of Illinois. Through this program EAPS has signed agreements with 9 Chinese universities. The universities are: Beijing University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Northwest University, Renmin University, Southwest University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University and Zhongshan University.

We will accept proposals that outline course taking/research stays at these universities. Per the terms of our exchange agreements, 2 faculty and/or graduate students per year per campus may take advantage of these exchange opportunities (for a semester or academic year). The Chinese university will offer accommodations, and a modest monthly stipend (Y800-1200) to cover food. EAPS will supplement this arrangement by covering full round-trip air travel up to $1500, as well as base rate tuition, fees, and insurance for those who plan to take courses, and for those who plan to be there conducting research (as unregistered students) $500/month towards research expenses.
