Looking as Asia: Changes, Continuities, and Consequences
41st Annual Conference of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast, June 15-17, 2007
Changes in Asia appear to be occurring at an ever-accelerating pace: shifts in
political and economic power, the globalization and mediation of culture,
redefinitions of identity, and the increasing numbers of diasporic and
sojourning populations are notable examples. At the same time continuities,
both independent and in reaction to change, are part of Asia's lived
experience. Our gaze upon Asia has also changed; it has become more diverse.
The greater representation of indigenous, heritage, and minority voices in our
field is notable. There are also an increasing number of practitioners, culture
workers and "applied" colleagues coming to the table.
The 2007 ASPAC Conference in Honolulu offers a singular opportunity and a
unique space to look at Asia in terms of continuity and change, and to consider
their cultural, political, economic, religious and historical consequences.
Embracing Hawaii's tradition of aloha, the Conference becomes a setting in
which to reflect about our field, to network with colleagues, and to reconnect
with friends. ASPAC welcomes submissions in all areas of Asian Studies. Paper
application deadline is May 1, 2007. For full particulars please visit
