SECOND KANGAKU WORKSHOP OF THE COLUMBIA-KEIO-VENICE CONSORTIUM
“Reception of Chinese Texts in Early and Medieval Japan”

Graduate students, faculty, and library professionals are invited to
participate in a ten-day workshop on Sino-Japanese Studies to be held at Keio
University/Tokyo from July 23 to August 3 2007. The course will cover the
Japanese reception of exemplary Chinese anthologies like the Wenxuan and the
Santishi and of the works of Bo Juyi, Su Shi and Huang Tingjian in a wide
variety of kanshibun texts ranging from the Honcho monzui, the Honcho zoku
monzui, Honcho mudaishi, Wakan roeishu, Shinsen roeishu, to medieval personal
collections of Ikkyu and Eiho Yoyu.
The workshop will be co-taught by Professors Sato Michio (Keio University),
Horikawa Takashi (Tsurumi University), and Sumiyoshi Tomohiko (Shido bunko
Institute, Keio University). Lectures and discussions will be accompanied by
hands-on study of invaluable primary materials from the Shido bunko Institute
and another private collection. The language of instruction is Japanese, and
familiarity with either kanbun or Literary Chinese is required. China scholars
with a good command of Modern Japanese are especially encouraged to apply.
This course is part of a consortium between Columbia University/Barnard, Keio
University and University of Venice/Italy, which take turns in hosting annual
Kangaku Workshops.
Although there is no tuition for the course, participants will have to pay for
their travel and for their housing. Depending on demand, a group rate at a
nearby hotel can be arranged for our participants.

to 20 participants.
