(The First Announcement)
The 6th International Conference on Chinese Language Pedagogy and the First International Conference on Teaching Chinese to American Students will be held in Nanjing and Yangzhou on August 3-5, 2007. (Deadline 30 Nov. 2006) The purpose of the conference is to promote academic exchange and cooperation among teachers and scholars in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCSL) in and outside China. The theme of this conference is weighing on teaching Chinese to American students, but the conference also accepts papers on teaching Chinese as a foreign language to students in other countries.
The Conference welcomes papers (in Chinese or English) on, but not limited to, the following topics for discussion:
1) Common and special features of the Chinese learning styles among American students
2) Curriculum designs, teaching methods and techniques in the classrooms of TCSL (focusing on American students)
3) Case studies on teaching Chinese characters, pronunciation, grammar, speaking, reading and writing to American students
4) Management of Chinese language programs for American students
5) Teacher training programs for Chinese language teachers in U. S.
6) New concepts and developments in compiling textbooks for teaching Chinese to American students
7) Secondary school Chinese classrooms and AP Chinese in US
8) Comparative studies among HSK, TOFEL, and AP Chinese Test
9) Sino-American cultural differences in relation to Chinese language teaching and learning
10) Application of educational technology in Chinese language instruction
11) Researches on Chinese language acquisition and pedagogical development in TCSL

Teachers and scholars outside Mainland China, including those in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, who intend to attend the Conference should fill out the on-line Attendee’s Registration Form at: http://classes.yale.edu/chns150/conferences/2007nanjing/ at your earliest convenience and submit it before November 30, 2006.
Those who intend to present a paper at the Conference should send the paper abstract (no more than one page) as a file attached to an e-mail message to Dr. Wenchao He at wh3@nyu.edu and Dr. Ling Mu at ling.mu@yale.edu before January 31, 2007. The reviewing team formed by the Conference Committee will review the paper abstracts anonymously and will also notify paper abstract submitters of the status of their paper abstracts in March 2007.
Those whose paper abstracts are accepted will need to send the completed papers to Dr. Wenchao He at wh3@nyu.edu by May 31, 2007 so as to be included in the Conference Proceedings to be published. The Conference Committee reserves the right to review a completed paper again if it is drastically different from its original paper abstract. The format and other requirements of the paper will be provided in the acceptance letter.
Post-Conference Tours: 1) Confucius hometown Qufu & Taishan Mountain, 2) Huangshan Mountian, 3) Nanjing. Suggestions for tours to other nearby places are also welcome. Final decisions on tours will be made after all suggestions are collected.
