CFP: Genre in Asian Film and Television (collection; prop. deadline 31 Mar.)
Genre in Asian Film and Television
Edited by: Xin Zhang (University of Wales Aberystwyth), Angelina Karpovich (Brunel University), and Felicia Chan (University of Ulster).
Submissions are invited for a proposed collection entitled 'Genre in Asian Film and Television'. Existing examinations of genre in Asian visual media have tended to focus on film, rather than television. Among those, certain genres (melodrama, martial arts, horror) and national contexts (India, trans-national China, Japan, and more recently, South Korea) have received the lion's share of academic attention.
This collection aims to re-address those genres and locations which have so far been overlooked in much of Western academic writing on Asian film and television. Proposals which consist of case studies of individual media texts, comparative studies across generic or national contexts, and overviews of the historical development of genres within particular national (and trans- and inter-national) contexts are equally welcomed, as are explorations of popular genres outside the national contexts most commonly associated with them (e.g., the musical outside India, martial arts outside Hong Kong, etc.).
Possible topics may include:
* Documentary
* The biopic
* Propaganda films/television
* Non-narrative/experimental films
* Quiz and Game shows
* Lifestyle television
* Music Videos
* News
* Reality television
* Science fiction and fantasy
* Animation and Children's television
* Comedy, parody and sitcoms
* Educational television
* Sports coverage
* Folklore, Literary, and Comic book adaptations
* Transnational exports and adaptations
* Film and/or television genres of South-East Asia

* Film and/or television genres of Asian diasporas
Proposals of up to 500 words, including a brief author bio and publishing history, should be sent to asiangenre@diino.com by 31st March 2007.
