CFP: "Asia in the World" (47th SECASS) (1 Oct; 18-20 Jan; South Carolina)
Call for Papers: Asia in the World
The 47th Annual Meeting of the Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (SECAAS)
Hosted by Walker Institute at the University of South Carolina Hilton
Oceanfront Resort, 18-20 January 2008 in Hilton Head, South Carolina
PROPOSALS: You can submit a paper or full panel proposal by submitting the
proposal form contained on the SEC/AAS website:
http://www.uky.edu/Centers/Asia/SECAAS/seras.html
Please e-mail, fax, or post your proposals by 1 October 2007 to ensure full
consideration.
CHAIRS: Our local arrangements chair is Dr. Hal French of USC
( Frenchh@gwm.sc.edu) and our program chair is Dr. Noell Wilson of University
of Mississippi (secaas08@olemiss.edu)
DUES: Conference participants are required to SEC/AAS members and to pay
annual dues of $20 ($10 for graduate students). The membership form is
available at http://www.uky.edu/Centers/Asia/SECAAS/member_application.html
THEME: The conference theme for this year is Asia in the World and we
particularly encourage the submission of papers addressing the role of Asia
in larger global trends. As in previous years, the theme is designed to
provide a focus for discussion, rather than to discourage papers on other
themes.
VENUE: Our venue in 2008 is the Hilton Oceanfront Resort, site of our 1993
and 1995 meetings. It is, as advertised, an oceanfront resort, with
wonderful amenities. Single and double room rates are $89 per night. Hotel
reservations can be made by calling Hilton Central reservations at
1-800-Hiltons and identifying our group.
SUPPORT: Please be aware that three $200 grants will be available this year
for graduate student presenters to help with travel costs. Graduate students
who wish to be considered for this award must indicate this at the time they
submit their paper proposals. Preference will be given to those students
outside a two hundred mile radius of the conference site. For further
information see the SEC/AAS website.
UPDATES: Please check
http://www.uky.edu/Centers/Asia/SECAAS/seras.html
for updated conference information. Our thanks to Ken Berger for his
gracious service as webmaster.
At Hilton Head, all registered participants will receive copies of the newly
redesigned 2007 issue of the Southeast Review of Asian Studies (SERAS).
Please consider SERAS as a future outlet for your work by submitting your
conference paper, scholarly notes, or reviews of recently published books in
the field. (We would be happy to review your recently published book on
Asia, provided you can send us a copy). For further information, contact
Editor Steve Gump at sgump@uiuc.edu. Past issues
of SERAS and further information are available on-line at
http://www.uky.edu/Centers/Asia/SECAAS/seras.html
