The conference aims to 1) foreground gender as a critical and analytical
lens in the study of Chinese films, and 2) to advance gender studies in the
areas of Chinese visual culture, media, and modernity. The conference
committee welcomes papers on all aspects of gender and Chinese cinema,
particularly papers that focus on Chinese women¹s roles as directors,
producers, cinematographers, and scriptwriters. Chinese cinema is broadly
conceived here to include films produced in mainland China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, and in the overseas diaspora. Categories of interest include but are
not limited to:

1. Study of Chinese female authors/auteurs (directors, producers,
cinematographers ,scriptwriters)
2. Feminist re-view of canonical Chinese films
3. Feminist theory and Chinese women¹s cinema
4. Gender, cinema, and Chinese community-building (national, regional,
ethnic, and diasporic)
5. Cinematic representation of women and Chinese visual modernity
6. Gender, spectatorship, and Chinese audience
7. Cinematic (re)constructions of femininity and masculinity in modern China
8. Gender and socialist cinema
9. Gender and genre in Chinese cinema
10. Chinese gender, aesthetics, and cinematic narrative
11. Gender, sexuality, and performance in Chinese cinema
12. Colonialism, post-colonialism, and gender in Chinese cinema

Interested scholars and graduate students should submit Chinese and English
abstracts (approximately 250 words) for individual presentations and panel
proposals (by January 15) to Professor Yang Yishu at the following email
