@UIUC: East and Southeast Asia Reading Group Meeting (27 Oct.)

This is a reminder that the East and Southeast Asia Reading Group will hold its
next meeting on Friday, October 27 at 2 PM in the Intermezzo Café at the
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. We will be discussing Yong Xue,
“’Treasure Nightsoil as if it were Gold’: Economic and Ecological Links Between
Urban and Rural Areas in Late Imperial Jiangnan.” Late Imperial China, Volume
26, Number 1 (June 2005): 41-71.

Until recently historians have focused on the ways in which Late Imperial
urbanization reshaped the countryside. In this article Yong Xue attempts to
bring the relationship between urban and rural China back into balance by
suggesting that many peasants interacted and engaged with the cities far more
than has been heretofore recognized. Whether you are interested in cultural,
rural, urban, and ecological history, this article offers something for you.

You can obtain this article one of three ways. First, as usual, photocopies of the
article can be found in the East and Southeast Asia Reading Group bin by the
graduate student mailboxes in the History Department office in 309 Gregory
Hall. Or, if you prefer, you can download and print off the article from the library
server. From the UIUC Library Gateway homepage you can click on the
“Electronic Journals” link, then “Asian Studies” and then search for Late Imperial
China. Finally, you can go directly to Project Muse at http://muse.jhu.edu/.

I look forward to seeing you there.

@UIUC: East and Southeast Asia Reading Group

Hey all,

I finally got the bureaucratic matters ironed out so that we can get the
2006-2007 edition of the East and Southeast Asia Reading Group under way.
For those of you unfamiliar with the group, this is a place for graduate students
with an interest in the region and its cultures to get together and discuss
readings of interest without the professors. We will alternate reading our own
work with articles (or perhaps a chapter or two of a book) of interest. I am
seeking volunteers to present their own work, and suggestions for the articles.
Please contact me as soon as possible with your suggestions.

For our first meeting on October 13 we will be discussing Doyoung Park's paper,
"Fujiwara Seika's Renunciation of Zen Buddhism".
This paper concerns the
relationship between Zen Buddhism and Neo-Confucianism in sixteenth and
seventeenth century Tokugawa Japan. Doyoung will be presenting this paper at
the upcoming Midwest Asian Studies Conference so please come with your
encouragement and constructive criticism to help prepare him for the
conference. You can pick up a copy of Doyoung's paper from reading group bin
labelled "East and Southeast Asia" located by the graduate student mailboxes in
309 Gregory Hall.

The group will meet at the coffee shop at the Krannert Center for the Performing
Arts at 2 PM. I would tentatively like to suggest the following schedule of
meetings for this term.

October 13
October 27
November 17
December 8

All meetings would be at the Krannert coffee shop at 2. Please feel free to invite
anyone else you think may be interested.

See you there,

David Stramecky, Coordinator
East and Southeast Asia Reading Group

@UIUC: Trans East Asia Cinema Reading Group

The Trans-East Asian Cinema Reading Group is underway for the Fall Semester (run by the incredible Eric Dalle and EK Tan). Listed in this email is our tentative schedule for events. As we did last year we try to coordinate and synchronize our meetings/topics with local events and guest speakers. All events are tentative, but we will inform you as events draw closer.

We are always in the process of updating our address book. If you received this email in error and do not want to be contacted about upcoming events, please email us and let us know. Similarly we invite the participation of all UIUC and local people interested in Asian cinema. So if you know someone who might be interested, please pass the word along.

For the schedule or more info send Eric and EK an email.
