@UIUC: East and Southeast Asia Reading Group Meeting (27 Oct.)

This is a reminder that the East and Southeast Asia Reading Group will hold its
next meeting on Friday, October 27 at 2 PM in the Intermezzo Café at the
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. We will be discussing Yong Xue,
“’Treasure Nightsoil as if it were Gold’: Economic and Ecological Links Between
Urban and Rural Areas in Late Imperial Jiangnan.” Late Imperial China, Volume
26, Number 1 (June 2005): 41-71.

Until recently historians have focused on the ways in which Late Imperial
urbanization reshaped the countryside. In this article Yong Xue attempts to
bring the relationship between urban and rural China back into balance by
suggesting that many peasants interacted and engaged with the cities far more
than has been heretofore recognized. Whether you are interested in cultural,
rural, urban, and ecological history, this article offers something for you.

You can obtain this article one of three ways. First, as usual, photocopies of the
article can be found in the East and Southeast Asia Reading Group bin by the
graduate student mailboxes in the History Department office in 309 Gregory
Hall. Or, if you prefer, you can download and print off the article from the library
server. From the UIUC Library Gateway homepage you can click on the
“Electronic Journals” link, then “Asian Studies” and then search for Late Imperial
China. Finally, you can go directly to Project Muse at http://muse.jhu.edu/.

I look forward to seeing you there.
