CFP: 4th Joint East Asian Studies Conf (Sheffield, UK; 30 Mar; 8-10 Sept)

You are warmly invited to attend the upcoming 4th Joint East Asian Studies
Conference (JEASC), to be held at the University of Sheffield, UK, 8-10
September 2009.

The JEASC is a triennial meeting held by the three academic associations
representing East Asian Studies in the UK (The British Associations for
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies – BACS, BAJS, and BAKS). We encourage
applications for individual papers, panels of up to four papers, or posters on
any aspect of China, Japan or Korea, as well as on cross-regional topics.
Scholars and graduate students from any country are welcome. There is no
overall theme for the conference, but the Plenary Session will be made up of
speakers from China, Japan and Korea who will speak on the topic of 'Hope in
Hard Times'.

Please go to the following page on the BAJS website for more details and a
conference application form. For the sake of convenience and efficiency those
interested in Chinese and Korean studies should also apply through the BAJS
pages. Deadline for receipt of applications is 30 March 2009.

Sheffield is a pleasant, friendly and fun medium-sized city located in the
centre of Britain, on the edge of the Peak District; which is the UK’s first
and most visited National Park. There are 530,000 people – 10 per cent of whom
are university students – and more than 2 million trees in the city. Sheffield
is easily accessible by train from London St. Pancras Station, from where the
Eurostar departs for Paris and the European continent. The nearest and most
convenient airport is Manchester. There are regular train services directly to
Sheffield from Manchester Airport.

The University of Sheffield’s School of East Asian Studies is one of Europe’s
leading centres for the study of East Asia. In 2006 SEAS collaborated with
Leeds University’s Department of East Asian Studies to create the White Rose
East Asia Centre (WREAC) to produce world class research and advanced research
training on East Asia.
