GUIDELINES

The prize is open to all graduate students engaged in study at a college or university after their first degree and having not yet completed their doctorate.

Those entering can choose their own topic; however, as with articles already published on History Compass, submitted essays should have a survey element, putting the chosen topic in context for the non-specialist. The incorporation of advanced graduate work is strongly encouraged.

The upper word limit is 5000 words, INCLUDING endnotes and bibliography.

History Compass Graduate Essays should be submitted by email as a Word document to:

Graduates must specify:

- which section they are entering their essay for
- provide the details of their affiliation
- provide their supervisor's name and email address

$$$: 2008 AKS Fellowship Program for Korean Studies (31 Oct.; 2008-9)

The AKS Fellowship Program for Korean Studies is designed to provide foreign scholars and doctoral candidates an opportunity to carry out their research (dissertation research) in Korea.

Eligibility

Individuals in the humanities and social sciences who are currently engaged in Korea-related teaching and research activities are eligible to apply (The fellowship is not open to Korean nationals, except those with permanent resident status in foreign countries):

1. Senior Research Fellowship: Associate professor level or above at a university or Ph.D. holder with more than 5 years of research experience.
2. Junior Research Fellowship: Assistant professor level or below at a university or Ph.D. holders with less than 5 years of research experience.
3. Pre-doc Fellowship: Doctoral candidates who have completed all academic requirements (i.e., ABD) except their dissertation.

While at the Academy, fellows will be provided the opportunity to give lectures to graduate students and to conduct joint research with faculty members. Applicants are encouraged to submit detailed research plans; those candidates with research programs that will result in a publication (e.g., a book or dissertation) are preferred.

Grant Period

The period of fellowship may begin any time between January 1 and December 31, 2008 and fellows are eligible for a maximum of one year support after arrival.

Fellowship Grant

1. Economy-class round-trip airfare: Only provided to overseas awardees
※ The payment will be made after your arrival. In conjunction with the public budgeting of Korea 2008, the GTR (Government Transportation Request) rate will be applied.
※ In case your original travel location is not listed on the GTR, AKS will pay the actual airfare. An appropriate voucher or invoice is required.

3. Monthly Stipend
(1) Senior Research Fellowship: 1,200,000 won
(2) Junior Research Fellowship: 900,000 won
(3) Pre-doc Fellowship: 700,000 won
4. Access to the facilities of the Academy, including the library.

Selection Procedure and Criteria

All applications are reviewed by a screening committee composed of AKS faculty members. The criteria used in reviewing applications are as follows:

1. Senior or Junior Research Fellowship
(1) The merit of the research plan and the feasibility of carrying out the proposed research at the Academy
(2) Capability to give lectures to AKS graduate students (preferably in English)
(3) Possibility of conducting joint research projects with AKS faculty members
(4) Capability of translating Korea-related books into foreign languages (English preferred).

2. Pre-doc Fellowship
(1) Excellence and feasibility of research topic
(2) Prospects of the proposed research to the future development of Korean studies

3. Applicant’s educational background, employment history, and previous awards record of any fellowship offered by the Academy, the Korean government, or other organizations will also be considered.

Obligations of Fellowship Recipients

1. Fellows are expected to present their research results at an Academy seminar.
2. Published research papers/books resultant from the fellowship should acknowledge the fellowship.
3. Fellows selected based on lecture proposals are expected to arrive at the Academy by February 20 (spring semester: March - June) and by August 20 (fall semester: September ? December).

Others

There might be a disadvantage to applicants who have been awarded fellowships from any Korean institutes or those who have rejected an AKS fellowship due to personal reasons within the last three years.

$$$: Twentieth-Century Japan Research Awards for 2007-2008 (U Maryland; 9 Nov 07; 31 Oct 08 まで)

The Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies and McKeldin Library, University of Maryland, invite applications for two $1,500 grants to support research in the library's Prange Collection and East Asia Collection on topics related to the period of the Allied Occupation of Japan and its aftermath, 1945-1960. Holders of the Ph.D. or an equivalent degree are eligible to apply, as are graduate students who have completed all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation. The competition is open to scholars in all parts of the world and from any discipline, but historical topics are preferred. University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students may not apply.

The application deadline is November 9, 2007. The grants must be used by October 31, 2008. Grant funds will be disbursed in the form of reimbursement for travel, lodging, meals, photoduplication, and related research expenses. Such costs as computers or software are not eligible. Reimbursement will require submission of receipts for processing by the University.

To apply, send a curriculum vitae and a two- to three-page description of the research project to the following address. Applications from graduate students must be accompanied by a letter from the principal faculty advisor attesting to the significance of the dissertation project and to the student's completion of all other degree requirements.

Materials in the Prange Collection include virtually all Japanese-language newspapers, news agency releases, magazines, pamphlets, and books dating from the period of Allied censorship, 1945-1949, in addition to over 10,000 newspaper photos. There are also materials published by Chinese and Korean residents, most of which are written in Japanese. Related collections in English include the personal papers of Charles Kades and Justin Williams. Office correspondence documenting policies and decisions of the Publications, Pictorial, and Broadcast Division, Civil Censorship Detachment, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, Japan, are complementary to official Occupation records housed at the National Archives, College Park. Japanese newspapers and magazines from the Prange Collection are available for research on microform in the East Asia Collection. Other Prange materials are made available for research in the Prange Collection reading area after consultation with the Prange Curator or Manager. The East Asia Collection contains Japanese-language books published during the wartime period, scholarly monographs on Occupied Japan, and a wide variety of reference works.

Prize: 2007 Theodore C. Bestor Prize for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper (1 June)

The prize of $250 is awarded annually for the best graduate student paper on any aspect of East Asian anthropology and/or East Asian anthropology’s contribution to the broader field.

Papers must deal with the anthropological study of East Asian societies and cultures, or other societies/cultures and diasporic and transnational communities with historical or contemporary ties to East Asia. Students must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of submission. Papers will be read by a committee of the Society for East Asian Anthropology and judged on original empirical research and contribution to the field; organization, quality, clarity of writing, and cogency of argument. The author of the paper judged to be of the highest quality will receive the prize.

Other: The Sir George Staunton Prize for an article by a young scholar (no date noted)

The Royal Asiatic Society announces the introduction of a new prize for essays produced by young scholars ('young scholar' being defined as either someone in the process of completing their PhD or someone who has been awarded their doctorate within the previous five years) working on the history, archaeology, literature, language, religion, archaeology and art of Asia. The focus is not limited to any specific region within Asia or to any particular discipline, something that reflects the broad remit of the Society's activities and interests. Award-winning submissions will be published in the Society's peer-reviewed Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society. No rigid limit is imposed on the length of the contribution but it should be appreciated that the most suitable length is c. 6,000 words. Submissions should be in 'hardcopy' on A4 sheets with double spacing accompanied by an electronic version. Alternatively scholars may submit as an email attachment to the Executive Officer, or sent by post to: The Journal, The Royal Asiatic Society, 14 Stephenson Way London NW1, 2HD.
